$282.2 billion
That’s how much investment went into clean energy solutions across the globe in 2019, a rise of 1% from the previous year.
Investments in clean energy solutions are on the rise, and it’s not just because of the instability in the global fossil fuel industry. Cost-effectiveness and potential tax credits in North America and elsewhere have made renewables a more popular solution for governments, businesses, and homeowners alike.
However, it’s not only the affordability that has caused some to declare clean power as the future of the energy sector. The positive social, economic, and environmental impacts of renewable energy make it a logical next step in the evolution of energy. Modern values of health and wellness, job security, smart investments, and sustainable community initiatives are well-served by clean energy solutions. This is the main reason the team of leaders involved in WATT Renewables have immersed themselves in creating innovative solutions for a problem that has persisted throughout our history as human beings.
Environmental Impacts
Energy usage is on the rise, which means the negative effects on the planet are rising as well. Still, the results of studies and data gathering aren’t all negative. Fossil fuel use is down 4% in the US from a decade ago, with wind, solar, and geothermic sources rising steadily. However, there is a long way to go to reduce the environmental impacts our high-powered lives are currently creating for the earth. WATT Renewables aims to be part of amplifying that change over the decades to come.
Sustainable Power that Will Last for Generations
We’ve seen many shifts in how we harness energy from the earth over the centuries, from burning wood, coal, oil, and petrol to harnessing nuclear power to drawing on renewable energy sources. In the past, immediate affordability was the answer to the question of, “how do we power our modern lives?” Now, in the age of technology, we’re looking toward sustainable solutions that will serve us throughout our lifetimes and for generations to come. It’s our legacy to our future children and grandchildren.
Improving Energy Security Through Fuel Diversification
Energy security is something we typically take for granted in first world countries, but in other regions, it’s a real threat. Access to energy solutions is no longer a luxury in communities across the world; it’s a necessity.
Even in Northern Canada, many communities depend almost entirely on diesel to power industry and everyday life. It’s critical that we reduce dependence on finite natural resources, especially in remote locations. This dependence can result in negative economic impacts, especially when the resources in question are fluctuating in price and availability. In Canada, the federal government has actively sought out alternatives to diesel, and this is a movement that can be found in governments across the globe.
Reducing Risks
The switch to renewable energy sources also reduces the potential for fuel spills. Spills can result from the transportation, storage, and use of fossil fuels and energy products. The environmental impacts of spills can last for generations, and the cleanup has major economic and social consequences.
Building Communities & Social Structures
Inclusive Solutions for Anywhere on Earth
For us, innovation is inclusive, which means everyone should have equal access to new technology and solutions that better their communities, lives, and the planet. Our clean energy solutions have been designed with inclusivity in mind.
Using distinct systems and technology, we’ve created three solutions:
- Microgrid
- Off-Grid
- Grid-Tied
These three products allow us to design and install renewable energy systems in virtually any place on Earth. We’ve worked across borders and oceans to bring clean, affordable, and stable energy to homeowners, small villages and communities, businesses, and remote locations.
Each solution has specific applications, but in general, we follow a process to create a vision for power systems in the area we’re working within. We begin by assessing the resources currently available and determining whether it will be more cost-effective and sustainable to supplement these systems (through grid-tied systems), or to create a fully off-grid system that will allow for the complete replacement of current power systems. Microgrid systems are a hybrid of these two, allowing for the fully independent generation of energy when necessary.
Giving Power Back to Communities
In most communities, control over energy sources translates to control over their lifestyle, resources, and social organization. Currently, there is a politics of energy that has taken power out of the hands of the community and put it into other social structures. One of our main tenets is strengthening society through “capacity building,” which takes place at the individual, organization, and community levels.
Economic Impacts
Creating Local Jobs
The products are only the physical portion of our work in the communities we serve. Engineering, building, constructing, and maintaining a power supply system is complex. Our turn-key solutions help make sure the solution will operate smoothly for those who rely on it. As a result, local jobs are created to help with ongoing maintenance. We’re committed to building capacity in the regions we serve, which is why we provide full training and decent work based on our technology.
Reliable Energy
Humans depend on energy to power their lives, from home to work and everywhere in between. Current solutions are not always reliable, which is why there has been a movement toward supplementing or shifting to renewable energy.
Technology demands new solutions for powering our lives. With renewable energy, the cost of activities like travel, education, and developing new industries will decrease in cost, providing more opportunities for people and social structures to grow.
Get Involved
We’ve seen the difference clean energy solutions can make when they’re led by individuals, organizations, and communities. The WATT Renewables team has overseen projects that have truly changed the social, political, and environmental landscapes of the communities where we work.
