Calgary, AB ~ May 8th, 2020
If there’s one truth about 2020, it’s that it’s been a game-changer for everyone. With the pandemic keeping everyone from businesses to families from everyday activities, it sometimes feels like we’ve entered a parallel universe.
Sustainability has been important to us from the outset, but this international crisis is shining a spotlight on why sustainability matters for our global future. As oil and gas prices plummet and jobs drop off, global energy markets are looking for new ways to harness reliable economic growth.
Sustainable development in any industry is forward-thinking. When we talk about sustainable development, we’re not just planning for our future, but the future of generations to come. With normal everyday activities put on hold to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, more people are thinking ahead to what future generations might face. Although the reason behind the mindset shift isn’t optimal, this type of thinking could result in progressive outcomes for future generations.
New World: New Ways of Achieving Our Goals
Like most businesses, keeping up with major transitions in the way we do business amidst the coronavirus has been challenging. Our goals haven’t changed, but the way we’ll reach them has.
Although we’re focused specifically on the energy sector in the work we do, the way we go about that work allows us to have a greater impact. We’re working toward a total of 17 sustainable development goals that range from decent work and economic growth to climate action and gender equality.
Here are a few specific goals related to those top 17 and how we plan to achieve them in 2020:
- Providing Stable Energy Rates is More Important than Ever
Stability is something no one takes for granted right now. With oil and gas markets bottoming out beyond what any economist could have imagined, people and businesses are reaching out to grab onto whatever stable price points they can.
The sustainable energy technology we have developed is designed to harness reliable natural resources to reduce energy costs. We’ve taken that stability in price points a step further by charging flat fee rates, rather than usage-based rates.
- Designing and Investing in Green Technology
Technology is paving the way for new ways to power a modern lifestyle with less environmental impact. As the world’s mindset shifts from “how can we power this?” to “how can we power this sustainably?” companies are stepping up to create new solutions. We’re proud to be among the leaders in this arena, and our goal for this year is to continue to work on new technology with investments that make a difference.
We’re also interested in what other technology companies are doing to create sustainability in their industries. For example, other Alberta-based companies are creating sustainability in the building sector, with solutions such as “hempcrete blocks.” Municipal, provincial, and federal governments are also investing heavily in creating “green jobs” right now, from transportation and waste management to agriculture and energy. With all of this green investment and innovation around us, we know we’re on the right path for the future.
- Creating Decent Work & Economic Growth
One of the most important sustainability goals we’re seeking this year is to create decent work and economic growth in the specific communities we’re working within. With economic conditions as they are, providing stable and well-paying jobs is the top priority for socially responsible organizations.
For us, working in the energy sector is not just about investing in resources, but investing in people and communities. We want to provide energy, jobs, and economic stability in the regions where our solutions are making a difference.
- Developing Partnerships to Meet Our Sustainability Goals
Change on a global scale is only possible when people and organizations work combine their resources and efforts. Developing partnerships is our 17th goal, and it’s one of the most important because it will lead to a heightened ability to achieve the other 16 goals on our list. We align ourselves with partners who share our goals and vision, and who are dedicated to executing on that vision.
The renewable energy market is taking flight and opportunities are gaining in strength, with projections for renewable energy solutions generating almost half the world’s power by 2050. The WATT Renewables team is highly motivated to bring sustainable investment opportunities to people and businesses around the world.
- Growing in Our Own Backyard
We’ve set our horizons for new energy solutions broadly over the globe, but there’s an especially potent sense of urgency to finding solutions in our own backyard. With headquarters in Alberta, Canada, WATT Renewables has seen how plummeting oil and gas prices impact everyone, from businesses and industry workers to families shopping at grocery stores.
While we continue to nurture our international clean energy projects for the next five years, we’re also turning our sights inward. Canada is already a leader in renewable energy, with wind and solar energy solutions growing the fastest. There is a great potential for Canadian residents and business owners to benefit – both from implementing the technology here and from investing in the solutions we’re providing globally.
